JMEC chair meets UN Panel of Experts, National Dialogue Chair

The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) has on Wednesday briefed members of the United Nation Panel of Experts on South Sudan.

The two members Andrews Atta-Asamoah and Andrei Kolmakov were briefed by the JMEC Chairperson H.E. Festus Mogae.

Among issues discussed included general security situation in the country, status of implementation of the Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict of the Republic of South Sudan (ARCSS), the Agreement on Cessation of Hostilities signed in December last year and challenges hindering implementation.

The UN Panel of Experts whose mandate was extended pursuant to UN Security Council Resolution 2290 (2016, are mandated to gather, examine and analyze information regarding incidents of non-compliance and to report to the Sanctions of the Security Council for appropriate action.

The Chairperson had also met the Chairperson of National Dialogue and the Committee of Concerned Citizens, Amb. Francis Deng.

During the meeting, H.E. Mogae reiterated his support for an inclusive, transparent National Dialogue, saying such process compliments the ARCSS, the HLRF and other efforts aimed at seeking peace in the country.

“I, at many times expressed my association with the National Dialogue so long as it compliments the Peace Agreement and the High Level Revitalization Forum,” he said.

Amb. Deng thanked JMEC for its role in peace building and the support it offers towards the National Dialogue.

“We will be part of the national and international agenda to seek peace,” he said.

The JMEC Chair also held discussion with the Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Deng Alor Kuol.
