RJMEC Chairperson visits Brussels, Oslo, briefs international partners on the R-ARCSS
The Interim Chairperson of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) Amb. Maj. Gen. Charles Tai Gituai had successful diplomatic engagements with international partners in the Belgian and Norwegian capitals, Brussels and Oslo, respectively.
In Brussels, Amb. Gituai had a successful briefing session with the members of the Political & Security Committee of the European Union. Amb. Gituai outlined the IGAD region geostrategic, security & geopolitical situation in relation to South Sudan peace process and the progress of the implementation of the peace Agreement.
He highlighted the key challenges facing its implementation and also the critical pending tasks critical to achieving free, fair and credible elections in December 2024. Amb. Gituai thanked the European Union and its member states for the continued support to the South Sudan peace process and to the implementation of the R-ARCSS, in particular.
Further, Amb. also briefed the S.Sudanese & Ethiopian Ambassadors to the EU & Benelux countries, Amb. Samuel Luate and Amb. Hirut Zemene respectively. He also briefed the Ireland’s Ambassador to the Political & Security Committee of the EU, Amb. Cait Moran.
In Brussels, Chairperson Amb. also had an interactive briefing session with IGAD ambassadors to the EU & Benelux countries. The ambassadors were from Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia.
As part of his continued engagements with the international partners, RJMEC Chairperson, Amb. Gituai had a productive meeting with the Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service (EEAS), Amb Rita Laranjinha, EU International Partnerships and the EU Service for Foreign Policy Instruments departmental heads, in Brussels.
In Oslo Norway, ,Chairperson Amb. Gituai briefed the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Royal Norwegian government, H.E. Mr. Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik and the Norwegian Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, H.E. Amb. Jon Anton Johnson. Also present during the briefing was the Director of Horn of Africa & West Africa at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Elisabeth Schwabe-Hansen. Chairperson Amb. also briefed the S. Sudan Ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway, Amb. Mustafa Lowoli Walla Jabi.
Amb. Gituai Amb. Gituai in his briefings, gave a special emphasis on key pending tasks of the R-ARCSS & the need to expedite their completion ahead of the expected elections in December 2024.
The international partners thanked RJMEC for the briefings and its role in overseeing the implementation of the R-ARCSS. The meetings took place between 25th – 30th September 2023.
